https://infoweb-newsbank-com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/apps/news/document-view?p=WORLDNEWS&t=pubname%3AMIHB%21Miami%2BHerald%252C%2BThe%2B%2528FL%2529/year%3A2019%212019/mody%3A0121%21January%2B21&f=advanced&action=browse&format=text&docref=news/171176097785D630
Description of Story: The article begins by stating the growing interest of consumers purchasing vacations on cruise lines. As a result, cruise line companies are having to recruit new employees to fill cooking, housekeeping, and personal attendants. The article continues by detailing what parts of the world they intend to hire people from, the number of people they need, the skills they need to develop and some of the conditions workers have to deal with while working.
Description of Problem: The problem in this article is the needing of hiring thousands of qualified workers and having to train each individual to a certain level of independence. Cruise lines must find out if a particular worker is made for "a life at sea" or if they seem only interested for a certain amount of time.
Description of who has the problem: The cruise line withholds this problem because they must be able to fill these positions each year when turnover rates are higher than normal.

A child is among four shot and injured during party at South Dade apartment complex
Description of Story: The article mentions a horrific shooting in South Florida that happened just recently. It states that the shooters have not been taken into custody yet. One person who was near the scene described it as a war zone with people diving for cover.
Description of Problem: The problem mentioned in this article is the ability of people having access to fire arms. This has been a very debatable issue over the past couple of years due to the numerous amounts of gun-violence.
Description of who has the problem: The United States of America withholds this problem in a more broad spectrum due to the government having ultimate control of fire arms access and who can purchase or obtain a gun. The opportunity within this article is the ability to save innocent peoples lives that did nothing wrong to lose their life in the first place.
3.
Amazon's massive deforestation would make global climate change even worse. Brazil's Bolsonaro should abandon this destructive idea.
Description of Story: The article begins by mentioning the warming of the planet's ocean by forty percent. Furthermore, Brazil's new president has declared the idea of deleting massive portions of Brazil's amazon which will effect global warming for the rest of the world. It later mentions the economic opportunities that China and Brazil have by deleting forestland for business.
Description of problem: The problem defined in this article is that if we keep tearing down the green forests of the planet, the climate will continue to change for worse conditions. Global leaders must realize the effects that a business idea may have for the future.
Description of who has the problem: Brazil has the problem because they will be judged by other countries of how destructive they can be to the planet's climate and be seen as irresponsible.

Carnival passengers say they were hurt when ship tilted, lawsuit says
https://infoweb-newsbank-com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/apps/news/document-view?p=WORLDNEWS&t=pubname%3AMIHB%21Miami%2BHerald%252C%2BThe%2B%2528FL%2529/year%3A2019%212019/mody%3A0118%21January%2B18&f=advanced&action=browse&format=text&docref=news/1710AA6C32D9F5A8
Description of story: This was my favorite of the five articles in that it seemed very odd to me when finished reading it. The story is that when the Carnival Cruise line took off, the ship tilted for 60-seconds. As a result, plates and knives fell onto some of the passengers and they received cuts and bruises. Now a lawsuit is being proposed against Carnival by the injured plaintiffs due to a ship malfunction.
Description of problem: The problem is the malfunction of the ship and now that Carnival has to deal with a monetary lawsuit against them for something that was not intentional.
Who has the problem: Carnival has the problem because they caused the harm to the passengers of the cruise.

This college QB suffered a horrific knee injury not long ago — now he's doing leg presses
Description of story: Star athlete Mckenzie Milton suffered a gruesome leg injury a few months back during USF's bowl game. I actually witnessed this on TV live when it happened and it was truly horrific. I read this article because it told me Milton's status on the road to recovery and that he has regained strength in his leg and is able to work out.
Description of problem: Football in general is a problem with human safety. It seems almost every other week someone is getting injured very badly from a football accident.
Who has the problem: The NFL has the problem in a larger spectrum because they need to come up with ways to protect its players from injuries. However, in this article Milton had the ultimate problem by his leg breaking.
Hi Matthew,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading about the opportunities you found in each article. I found your second article about the four children getting shot to be the most eye opening. Putting all politics aside, America has a serious problem with mass shootings that needs to be addressed much more efficiently. Your descripition of the Carnival ship tilt reminded me about the article I described about Royal Caribbean's gastrointestinal outbreak. There clearly has been a lot of recent problems with cruise ships.
Hey Matthew,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading the opportunities you came up with. The one I found to be most interesting was the one about Brazil's Amazon. This is a terrible decision made by Brazil's president. In many instances the tearing down of forestry for business opportunities is a seemingly quick financial fix, yet takes the Earth thousands of years to recover from such a decision. This reminds me of the U.S. pulling out of the Paris Climate agreement and looking like a joke to the rest of the world.
Great Job,
Ayla
Hey Matthew,
ReplyDeleteI really liked all the opportunities you presented in your post. I found that overall you did really well in following the guidelines, but also adding some more. I found the most interesting story to be of UCF star Mackenzie Milton, who suffered the horrific leg injury. Sadly, I find that this happens to many athletes, which is horrible considering they are attempting to become professional. I feel as though with the right treatment and physical therapy he may be able to play again, but not at the same level.
