12A – Figuring Out Buyer Behavior No. 1

Choosing a segment:

For this assignment, I chose the segment of students in their low 20s who are concerned with the amount of money they have in order to survive. These students all have part-time jobs that pay for their rent, car, and food expenses. I interviewed three people total, two guys and one girl who all had a strong passion for fashion. The first male (Jackson) has over fifty pairs of sneakers that add up over thousands of dollars. The second male (Ricky) enjoys fashion but decides to purchase cheaper clothing because he cannot really afford the hyped items these days. The female (Anna) enjoys shopping online because she likes having what other girls do not have here in Gainesivlle, FL.

Interviews:

I ultimately learned that the demand for my store would be very high according to these three very similar individuals who all love shopping and high-end brands like Louis Vuitton and Gucci. They all agree that they cannot afford buying brand new pieces from either Gucci or Supreme because it is impossible to buy for retail. However, with the idea of allowing people to consign their items at my store, this would attract people searching for this limited piece of clothing/shoe. In addition, each interviewee agrees that they should not be spending this kind of money on clothes/shoes but they love it too much. With this in mind, they all agree that my company would be a slow start up because not many people enjoy brands as much as other people and that they value other things and are not very materialistic. Overall, with the solution of bringing such an innovative company to Gainesville, they all agree that college students would eventually stop into my store to purchase a rare brand that is not seen in stores.

How would I describe this segment:

I believe that there are a lot of people out there that would be attracted to a store that has limited/ hard to get pieces of clothing and shoes because if you think about it...If these pieces are selling out in minutes on the internet, then a lot of people must actually be into this business idea of mine of starting a store here in Gainesville that supplies these products. In conclusion, all three of my interviewees have very similar fashion interests and consumer shopping methods that would relate to my companies demand and overall way of running its business. Every time each of my interviewees try to purchase a Supreme shirt or Yeezy sneaker, they will not be able to get a piece or pair because they sell out instantly by other peoples robot "adding to cart" systems.

  1. Hi Matthew,
I found your interview process and product to be very fun to read about. I personally love fashion and agree with the interviewees that students like me would occasionally come into your store and occasionally splurge on these limited edition brands. However, I am slightly concerned that Gainesville would not be the best location for your store as there is not a high concentration of wealth and many college students simply can not afford luxury brands.

  2. Hey Matthew,
I like how you selected the people you were going to interview, and I feel they fit right into the people you are looking to sell product to one day. People in college are always looking for the best and new styles, and starting here is a great idea. Lastly, I like your idea of a physical store dropping exclusive items. Lately it seems the only way to catch a pair of Yeezy's is online, and people would appreciate and pay more for it in person.
