18A – Create a Customer Avatar

For this assignment, I will focus on one of my great friends, Nick who I have known since sophomore year of high school. Nick currently lives in South Florida and is a senior at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU). He is 21 years old and is an avid sneaker enthusiast with many pairs in his collection. Being a full-time student with no part time job, Nick has not been able to purchase all of the shoes that he really wants. As a result, he can either beg his parents for some money (which rarely happens anymore) or buy and resell pieces of clothing or shoes to put towards to a shoe that he would like to have and wear. He drives his Honda Accord for his commute to campus from his off-campus apartment. Nick is very focused on his studies at FGCU and is also part of a soccer club. Through this soccer experience he has been able to meet new people that have the same interest of high-end shoes.
After seeing Nick over this spring break, I was able to mention to him this assignment and my idea for opening a shoe and fashion store here in Florida that we have had talked about when we had first met years ago. Nick mentioned that his parents do not really support him buying such expensive sneakers to wear unless it is a good monetary investment. However, now that Nick has gotten older, he has realized that it is hard to live on his own and afford such expensive shoes and clothes. He has had to sell some of his shoes to pay for his rent and gas money. Overall, he was ecstatic to hear the news of me still having the idea of opening my own store in the near future and that he is happy to hear that I am still following my childhood dream. As I was talking with Nick I realized how much we have in common, we like shoes, have parents that do not understand the culture, and that we both have a car. Many people our age have this same theme of buying lots of shoes that they actually cannot afford, but in both Nick and my eyes these shoes will hold their value for years to come.

  1. Hi Matt.
I love the avatar you created based on your friend, Nick. You were creative, funny and witty with this post. I am a shoe lover myself, as I have previously mentioned and we both read the same autobiography about Nike. I am a believer that a good shoe is worth the money a lot of the time. However, I am pleased to see that Nick also values having a roof over his head and gas for his car more than having all of his shoes. He is learning the valuable gift of compromise. That being said, your idea of having a shoe store is awesome. Not only does it appeal to your target market, it crosses markets and age groups. I am a fan!

  2. Hi Matt,
You avatar, Nick, looks amazing! I found your post to be very entertaining and fun to read. It appears that you aim to target customers who may not necessarily be wealthy but their passion for fashion makes them go to great measures to purchase from your store. I feel that Nick is someone that a lot of college students, like myself, can easily relate to.

  3. Hey Matt,

Really like your avatar and think you did really well on the post. By how you described your avatar it seems you really know what your looking for with your entrepreneurial idea. I like how your idea involves a wide range of people, and allows for people from every socio-economic background. I think that the avatar also reveals some characteristics that make him universal. Overall, I think this was a good post, maybe you want to narrow your market.
