21A – Reading Reflection No. 2

I chose to read Thinking Fast And Slow by Daniel Kahneman

1) What was the general theme or argument of the book?
-The general theme of the book would be to double check everything twice and to not let one's brain overtake both the physical and mental states of one's body. It is essential to make sure that you view every option on a particular decision with open opinions on everything that could affect the final result. Overall, mistakes will always happen no matter what someone is doing. It is essential to regain the confidence to perform to one's best efficiency to make sure that you continue to accomplish one's goals for the future experiences that one deals with. The human brain is so powerful, and the way it operates in different situations can affect the rest of your day.

2) How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?
-In this class, I have learned to double check my work for any small details that is assigned with each assignment that is due. For example, the Customer Avatar assignment required us to make a digital creation of who we described. I almost forgot to attach this part of the assignment because it was so much fun making it that I forgot to upload it initially! With my mind being overtaken with joy, I had to recuperate my mental state and balance what I really needed in order to be successful with the requirements of the assignment. After fully reading this book, it made me realize that hard work is not given but ultimately earned wit hard work and dedication.

3) If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
-The exercise that I would design for this class after reading this book would be to assign each student the same task that is primarily difficult that would result in the same conclusion. However, the trick would be that the problem of the assignment is not able to be solved and that everyone participating would be super confused as to why they cannot solve the "puzzle". As a result, I would think that this assignment would relate to the overall theme of this book.

4) What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?
           - I would say that the aha moment for me while reading the book was getting to learn how interdependent system 1 is with system 2. For example, system 2 has the ability to experience doubt and during this time system 1 comes in for mental support. In addition, I did not know that memories influence future decisions so much. I came to a conclusion that Daniel might be inferring to the two hemispheres of our brain as the two systems because the left side is our language while the right side is our creativity. This different from my expectations because I guessed that the book would be about "think before you act" and not as much as in detail of the two different systems of how we act in certain situations.

  1. I actually chose to read this book as well and it was nothing what I was expecting it to be. The struggle with the two sides of the brain and how there is this internal competition inside of you going on was extremely interesting to me. I feel like you were able to describe the book very well, which shows you were really understanding what you were reading, which is always a good thing. I like how your 'aha' moment was the interdependent interactions of the two sides of the brain because I found that to be very cool as well. Great minds have solid book choices.

  2. Hey Matt,

Really interesting reflection, made me really intrigued to read the book myself. I was quite shocked by the idea that memories influence future decisions. I always thought that past experiences may influence decisions, but I had no idea how much they would influence them. I really enjoyed the theme of the book, of how we should always double check our work, as our brain can tend to wonder at times. Overall, very good post.
