Assignment 19A – Idea Napkin No. 2
Assignment 19A – Idea Napkin No. 2
Who you are. What your talents are. What your skills and experiences are. Also: what are your aspirations? Specifically regarding your business concept, how do you see this business (if you were to start it) playing a role in your life?
My name is Matthew Stevenson. I have concluded after talking to five people close to me that I am very passionate and caring for others. Most importantly, I have a talent for noticing someone else's feelings and being able to put a smile on that persons face when they are down. I am definitely someone with soft feelings that I am still trying to strengthen in order to aviod times of feeling disappointed or timid.
On the other hand, if I were to start this business concept up, it would make my life 10 times better than it is now. I would be following my childhood dream and most importantly it would develop my communication skills, and business experience.
What are you offering to customers? Describe the product or service (in other words, how you'll solve customers' unmet needs).
What I am offering is still the same product; which is better parking spots for UF off-campus students primarily. Students would be able to buy a parking decal for a premium in order to avoid having to ride the bus system every day of the week like myself. In addition, with the amount of off-campus students with part time jobs, students would be able to avoid rainy and cold conditions that really affect one's mood for the day. I would be helping both the students commuting to campus, and the university's profits in the parking registration department. I was very excited to hear the feedback from my classmates and they were all like me who enjoy parking closer to campus without having to be rained on or use an umbrella.
Who are you offering it to? Describe, in as much detail as possible, the demographic and psychographic characteristics of your customers. Think especially of this question: what do your customers all have in common?
I would be offering to the same target of off-campus students who attend the University of Florida that cannot afford to live right on campus. The competitor that I would be trying to eliminate is the University's strict policy of having off-campus students only being able to park at the Harn Museum and having to ride for 15 minutes on the bus to the far end of campus.
Why do they care? Your solution is only valuable insofar as customers believe its valuable to them. Here, explain why customers will actually pay you money to use your product or service.
The university should care because they would be able to generate larger revenues from students being able to pay more to park closer to the campus. The University would be able to promote more safe policies that would strengthen their corporate social responsibility. This is such a simple addition that UF should really adopt in order to make more money. Honestly, it makes no legitimate sense that students have such limited parking options if they live off-campus.
What are your core competencies? What sets you apart from everyone else? Also: what do you have that nobody else has?
I feel like my business concept is one of a kind because it is very simple and not everyone has thought of this idea. I do not have any competitors other than UF being a strict parking animal. However, if we have enough studies done and support from students, I think we would be able to persuade the parking department at UF to open this business that I am offering.
In addition to these five elements, please spend a paragraph evaluating whether you believe these elements fit together or whether there are aspects of your business concept that are weaker / out-of-joint with the others.
I believe that all my previous statements work well together, but it could be easily declined by UF because they are not willing to accept. Ultimately, I have no clue how I would go about starting this business because UF is very powerful and would not look at some 20 year old college student complaining about riding the bus system. I guess I should be grateful that the bus system is free 24/7. So, I really think my idea is potentially weak without the support of everyone who wants better parking options.
Two main points that I took from my feedback from my classmates for this assignment would be from myself because they did not provide constructive feedback: 1.) The strength of the current parking policies that UF currently has, and 2.) opening the window of the targeted market to more people that would like to park closer to campus and avoid the weather conditions that might be unfavorable that day. I was easily able to tie in this feedback to this Napkin #2 assignment and I really think it made my business argument stronger with better overall potential of really happening sometime in the future.

Hi Matthew.
ReplyDeleteI find myself a bit confused after reading this post. I went back to your first idea napkin which was a different idea if I read it correctly. In that post, you discussed the idea of a one of a kind shoe store which I think could be a great opportunity. However, this post discusses the idea of providing better parking for UF students. With this concept, I believe that this is something that many people think about but it would be an expensive opportunity to develop. I think you are correct about the need, but I think it will be much more difficult to exploit this opportunity.
Hi Matthew,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading about not only the features of your product but also your talents and skills. I think it is so awesome that your product is not only something that you are interested in but also something that is a childhood dream that brings out your passion. You definitely will have a much easier time working on a product that you love and will personally enjoy.
Hi Matthew,
ReplyDeleteI think your ability that put a smile on other’s face is excellent since this ability could help you communicate with others. Communicating is a very important skill when doing business with others. However, I think what you are fighting for is very stronger and you have to make a lot of effort to achieve it. All in all, you have a really good idea, Excellent!
