26A – Celebrating Failure

1) Tell us about a time this past semester that you failed -- whether in this class, or outside of this class. Don't spare any details! It'd be even better if there was something you tried several times this semester, and failed each time.

This semester I tried landing an internship with a fortune 50 or 500 company. This was a failure in that I still have not secured an intern position for the summer after numerous attempts. I really need an internship to graduate, and I have gone through interviews and still do not get the position after interviewing my candidate role. I honestly do not know what I am doing wrong to not obtain an offer from a company. However, I will keep trying no matter how many times I fail because everything usually all works out.

2) Tell us what you learned from it.

What I have learned from this failure is that I need to not give up, but to rather keep trying. I should rather polish my resume and cover letter to make it look more attractive visually and verbally for company recruiters so I can better my chances. In addition, I should take advantage of some of the advisors here at UF who could potentially help me out in the future. What I will do next time would be keeping the conversation over the phone screen as personal as possible and try to really connect with the interviewer.

3) Reflect, in general, on what you think about failure. Failure is hard, isn't it? It's embarrassing, sure, but it also means that we have to change something about ourselves. Talk about how you handle failure (emotionally, behaviorally). Finally, talk about how this class has changed your perspective on failure -- are you more likely to take a risk now than you were just a few months ago?

Failure is hard to except and it is a learning lesson that will be hard to learn. However, whenever I receive another phone call for the next interview it builds back my confidence. However, it is sort of like a roller coaster where my emotions and feelings go up and down whenever I fail in terms of this internship process. This class has taught me to never give up and continue to work hard so that we can keep following our dreams and making them a reality. For example, the first Elevator Pitch I failed pretty bad. However, we were given a second and third chance to better it. This is a great meaning to me because sometimes in life that second chance can make a big difference.
